TCBC Bike University Program: Midtown Greenway Coalition – An Update with Executive Director, Soren Jensen – October 6, 2022, at 07:00pm

TCBC Bike University is excited to feature Soren Jensen, Executive Director of the Midtown Greenway Coalition, who will provide the history of the coalition as well as an update on current activities. Soren has served in this position since 2011. Previously, he held positions with Target Corporation, The American Red Cross, and the National Parks Conservation Association. He holds a Master of Arts in Nonprofit Management from Hamline University, and a B.A. from the University of Iowa.

This will be a very special opportunity to get your questions answered about our beloved Greenway Trail. There are many, such as:
-How is it going with that bridge?
-How will the trail link between the bridge and the Ayd Mill Trail in St. Paul?
-When are they going to fix the botched repaving job from last year?
-What’s going on with these art murals? Will there ever be more murals rather than graffiti? What’s this we hear about light sculptures?
-How’s it going with safety initiatives, homelessness and crime around the trail?
-Are they ever going to reopen the Bike Center? Does the Coalition even have an office anymore?

These are just a few questions that come to mind. Bring your own issues about almost anything to do with the Greenway Trail!

Join us on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 07:00pm via Zoom.  To register for the program, go to the link below. Do not register through Ride Stats!

The program will start promptly at 07:00pm.

Special thanks to Tim Rand for organizing this session of Bike U!

PARK TO PARK is a MAPLESS scenic social no-drop ride meandering clockwise from Minneapolis through Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park and Champlin. We’ll cruise the Shingle Creek Trail, Palmer Lake trails, the Rush Creek Regional Trail, circle Elm Creek Park and — depending on our mileage and mood — return via the Coon Rapids Dam and follow the MRT on the east side of the river. Occasionally we’ll do the ride in reverse. Lunch stop at various eateries on the east side of Hwy 169 in Champlin. Pace depends on the abilities of our riders and is usually a brisk BC, but we’ll adopt one agreeable to all.

LOCATION: The Carl W Kroening Interpretive Center is just south of the North Mississippi Regional Park, located between I-94 and the Mississippi River at 49th Ave N. Please park south of the building.

DISTANCE: The ride is usually about 40 miles but there’s always a shortcut bailout route of half that distance. Early in the season we may do fewer miles.

DRIVING ALERT: Please check with MnDOT for detours.

WEATHER may cancel the ride, so if in doubt please check the RIDE CANCELED, DELAYED OR RESCHEDULED forum or call the ride leader.

The Market Loop – Darkness Day

The ride starts at the Market at Malcolm Yards. This will be a “B” effort ride that will be mostly on bike trails and low traffic roads. The ride leader will ride at a “B” effort pace and attempt to keep everyone that wants to ride at that pace together, but self-sufficient faster or slower riders are invited to ride at any pace that they prefer.

The route will be mostly on scenic paved bike trails throughout Saint Paul and Minneapolis. We will be riding on the Como Park, Reservoir Woods, Trout Brook, Gateway, Phalen, Bruce Vento, Lilydale Park and Crosby Farm Park trails. We will also ride on the new bike trail through the old Ford Assembly Plant, where we can view the restored Hidden Falls Creek. Slower riding speeds and riding single file will be necessary on most of the trails.

I have one planned rest stop at a Starbucks at mile 21. There are other options along the route for restroom stops.

Restrooms and water will be available at The Market at Malcolm Yards.

Here is the RWGPS link for the 38-mile route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/41108729

Why is this ride called ‘Darkness Day’? It’s because October 8th is Surly Darkness Day. The only day and place that the beloved 22-ounce bottles of Surly Darkness will be available, will be the Surly Brewery, just one block away.

I will have a limited supply of route maps or que sheets at the ride start, so please download the route you intend to ride onto your GPS bike computer or to print a map and cue sheet, click the GPS Route Link below, then click on More in the black box above the ride name, then Print Map & Cue PDF then Print Official

Please preregister, the ride leader will thank you.

There is a lot of parking at the Market at Malcolm Yards, but please park in one of the back rows and leave the close in parking for other customers. The ride briefing will be on the front beer garden patio.

Please join me for post ride drinks and food at the Market, then walk over to Surly to pick up you bottles of Darkness.
