Today’s ride is more of a city/urban ride with a taste of some country. This is an easy, flat route going around the Champlin/ Brooklyn Park/Anoka area.

The planned route is about 41 miles, but subject to change. The ride can be done with road bikes, although I may ride my gravel bike with 30mm tires. If I took my road bike it has 28 mm tires.

I have us stopping at a KwikTrip at about mile 20 for a break, but depending on who shows up to the ride we can either stop at the Coon Rapids Dam for a short break or stop at the Avant Garden in Anoka. The Avant Garden Coffee Shop is closer to the end of the ride. There are several places along the route for restrooms/satelites..

We’ll meet at Highpointe Park in Champlin. There is a satellite at the park, if needed.

The ride is posted as an mapless, A/B ride. The ride is planned as a group ride. I’ll be riding more of a B pace for those who wish to ride along and enjoy the sights.  I highly recommend you download the GPS file provided for the route so you can go any speed you like or if you get separated from the group. As with all of my rides, and as many riders have experienced, I often change up the route as we ride. If you have the route in some type of navigation device you might miss the real time route changes, but you’ll get back to the start/end.

IMPORTANT: The ride briefing is at 08:55 am and the ride leaves promptly afterwards. Please arrive at least 10 to 15 minutes before the ride briefing to sign in / check in and to get yourself and your bike ready to ride. Please sign in / check in once you arrive.

Looks like a fairly decent day to ride and it’s my birthday. Big whoop!! Have Pilates in the morning and too cold, windy, gets dark too early and I’m too wimpy to ride my entire age, but thinking we can do a third of it. You can do the math! Temperature supposed to be in the 40s with a west wind so planning to ride north and south from Oakdale Nature Preserve up to Tamarack Nature Center and back. We’ll make a quick rest stop at the Tamarack Nature Center biffy at about 12-14 miles before turning around.

Bring water and a snack since we don’t plan to stop anywhere to buy stuff. As always, this time of year, won’t break my heart if you’re even more wimpy than me and no one shows up! And ride is contingent on the forecast being fairly accurate. Colder temps, wind gusts approaching 20 mph and I might cancel and spend my birthday curled up in front of the fireplace! PLEASE MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE RIDE CALENDAR, RIDE CANCELLATIONS ON THE FORUM OR CALL OR TEXT ME 612.381.6711 IF ANY CONCERNS ABOUT RIDE GOING.

Bathrooms and water available at the Oakdale Discovery Center at the start and biffy at Tamarack Nature Center. I posted the route and I’ll have a couple cue sheets available at the start. Also, this time of year, I’d like us to ride together or with people who know where they’re going because I don’t want anyone getting lost or dealing with a flat or mechanical in the cold or impending darkness all by themselves. We’ll ride at a B/C level pace and average around 12-13 when we’re done.

    Thanks for pre-registering.

Here's my traditional annual recurring Hopkins (and St Louis Park) Holiday Lights route ride that I have scheduled in past years at this time.

The elves have been extra busy putting up it seems even more decorations than before.

Four well-decorated houses are featured this year, all are detailed on the Cue Sheet.

We'll take the time to stop and look at each one to enjoy the fruits of the labors of the decorators.  They are each good fun.

    Global Fat Bike Day

Since 2012, the first Saturday in December has been designated as “Global Fat Bike Day”. There will be fat bike rides all over the world. My version will be in Como Park and Reservoir Woods. I will have two routes, with two leaders. The easier 13-mile route avoids most of the difficult hills and technically challenging trail sections and is a better choice for beginning and intermediate fat bikers. The more difficult 17-mile route will be much hillier and more technically challenging and would be the appropriate choice for advanced fat bikers. You will have the option of doing multiple laps in reservoir woods if you want more miles.

There are no planned rest stops but we will regroup after each trail section or as needed to keep the groups together. Please carry enough water and snacks to get your through the ride of your choice.

Here is the RWGPS link for the advanced loop: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38097151

Here is the RWGPS link for the beginner/intermediate loop: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/38097275

The ride briefing will be in the grassy area between the pavilion and the Hamm Memorial waterfall.

Park your car in the parking lot on the south side of the pavilion. If that lot is full, there is a parking lot on the north side of the pavilion. Satellite restrooms are available on the north side of the pavilion. The route starts on the bike trail on the south side of the pavilion.

After the ride, please consider joining me for a post ride beer and lunch at the Dock and Paddle.
